Post the GDC Craziness

Hello my friends!

I hope you guys had an awesome week. My week went extremely well, I had a lot of fun at GDC and working as a Conference Associate. I got to meet a ton of new people and make new friends. I also got to try out a ton of new games. I also got to take part in the CA tradition of Witch Hunt. There were a few games I played that really stuck out. Those games were Cobra Paw, 5-Minute Dungeon, and The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls. All of these games were a lot of fun to play and learn. Cobra Paw and 5-Minute Dungeon were quick to learn and play. They made playing them with new people great and they’re a ton of fun. The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls was a lot of fun but is a bit complex and is a longer game. It plays a lot like Munchkin but it has a bit more to it. The rest of GDC was also fantastic.

This week was an amazing experience. I was able to have my first interview out of school. It was awesome to finally learn more about my prospects when going into an interview. I learned that my resume is good and that I have the proper skills and experience to perform in the jobs I’ve applied for. This means that the jobs I’ve applied to my reason for being denied could be due to my portfolio, cover letter, and/or the company chose someone else. I won’t ever truly know but at least it was a step. The other aspects of GDC were fantastic as I’ve said. I got to see a ton of my friends from last year which is my favorite part while also happy to meet new people. It’s great to have a family that continuously grows and is making new connections.

Well till next week all of you! I look forward to delivering any news to you all next week. I hope you guys have an awesome week!

Oscars Weekend

Hello my friends,

I hope you guys had a good week. My week was pretty good a little hectic, but good. My cold is practically gone and is now just a bit of runny nose. I’ve been applying to more and more jobs and trying to expand the areas I apply to. I’ve also been working a bit in engine. It’s been a bit challenging working in engine as I’m not around people that understand the engine so I have to figure it out on my own. So far it’s been a lot of googling and messaging my developer friends. I want to learn more about Unity and Unreal so that I can start making my own side project in engine. I’ll need to start watching more videos about programming and level building in unity.

Yesterday was the Oscars. It’s the first time I’ve watched the Oscars with my family in a few years. The Oscars are always fun to watch. It’s cool to see all the different stars from all areas of the industry. The Oscars always become a bit of a game. I’ll play Where’s Waldo just trying to find the different stars. The other game I play is the guessing game trying to figure out who would win the award. I tend to be very good at guessing which movie will win the award. The hardest award to guess though is “Best Picture.” This is typically hardest for me as I tend to have seen only a few of the movies. I’m very picky in movies I watch right now, but I want to see more. As for The Green Book winning I have no opinion on it other than I was surprised it won. I know people are angry about it winning but I haven’t looked into it too much so far.

Well til next week you guys. I hope you have an awesome time and I hope to give you good news next week.

“Kingdom Hearts III,” Unites all of the Plots for Better or Worse

Kingdoms Hearts III is the third game of the main trilogy, but there are over ten games in the series. The Kingdom Hearts series is made by Square Enix in conjunction with Disney. This creates a unique game with different iconic characters from both universes and also adds new characters. This game changes many aspects of the previous games and adds many new characters. The series follows Sora a keyblade wielding warrior and his two friends Donald and Goofy. As a player you get to partially control the paths of Sora’s abilities and how your companions use their skills. All of these lend towards the play style of the player.

The game has similar gameplay to the Final Fantasy series. It is a third person hack and slash role playing game that gives players more than enough options for abilities in combat. As I stated above these lend to different play styles. The player can be more of a mage focusing on magic and summons. The player could also focus on damage using the keyblade and combo systems to decimate all foes in their path. While lastly the player can choose to be more of a tank focusing on survivability and delivering combos. All of these playstyles merge and constantly work together. As a player you can also choose what keyblades you use having up to three different blades equipped. Each blade has unique abilities and also provides the player with different form changes improving Sora’s combat prowess. There are also summons these can summon different characters or Disney attractions. The Disney attractions are things like the mad tea cups and pirate ship. These different attractions help with combat and give more complex interactions. The character summons also give the player new powerful ally’s such as Simba. All of these can lead to intense and complex battles. This also leads to conflict almost being too hectic and busy.

The games story is very complex and confusing. The story is meant to combine all the stories of every other game in the series. The story is based around Sora finding the power of waking. The game also includes the stories of every world. Some are new stories such as Olympus where you assist Hercules. Other worlds are basically the movies such as Arendelle which tells the story of Frozen. While this can be cool or fun it also leads to issues with the main story not being explored. This is also not helped by the complex nature of the core story. The games story struggles at points from not making the player feel included in the world’s stories. Since the game must follow the stories that Disney made this must make it more difficult to create unique stories. However, in previous games they made the players feel as though they had a huge impact on the worlds. This one is not necessarily like that. The stories are fun, but it can take away from the core story. The impressive visuals and gameplay also create a beautiful visual narrative.

The game has many good points but also some bad points. The gameplay is amazing and flows beautifully. However, it has so many nuances and abilities that this makes combat too complex at times. It also isn’t helpful that you can’t always choose which of your abilities you use. These are the most powerful abilities in your arsenal but if you have several lined up you can’t pick between them. Another negative lies in the issues with the story telling as the core story is so rarely told. I will say these negatives aren’t game ending.

After looking at all of the negatives and positives I would give it a seven out of ten. The game has amazing gameplay. The story is also very enjoyable leading to an amazing ending. However, with the story’s failings and the combats issues these all lend to it’s score being lowered. I enjoyed the game and am excited to see where the series goes, but I won’t be playing it again for a long time.

Winter Wonderland in Seattle

Hello my friends,

I apologize for my late posting I’m a little sick and completely forgot yesterday. I hope you all are doing well. My week has been decent apart from getting sick. I sold a bunch of my cards on eBay so today I’m shipping them out. I finished a project I was working on so now you can go and buy Tales of Mahabharata on Steam. If you do you’ll have full access to the core game we released late last year and the free expansion that adds the war to the game. I’m very proud of the game and I’m excited to see how it does. I’m hoping to start seeing more reviews on Steam so that I have more feedback to help grow from. So please check it out and let us know what you think.

The past week has also been strange due to the winter storm in Seattle right now. This is the most snow I have ever seen in Seattle and it’s going to keep snowing. Typically we maybe get an inch or two where I live, but as of right now it’s about a foot deep. This probably means it’s going to be a hot summer which in Seattle can be very bad. Many older homes in Seattle don’t have A/C as it wasn’t needed, but now summers are getting into the hundreds which can be bad. With climate change going on we have been seeing more and more of these rapid and extreme changes. In Florida it meant I had more hurricanes. In Washington it means the weather will go from very cold to very warm. I love snow, but most people in Seattle are not ready for this amount. Hopefully, people are staying safe and warm.

Well til next week my friends! I hope you guys have a wonderful week and stay safe. I hope to have more good news next time!

A Week of Building

Hello my friends!

I hope you guys have had a great week. This week has been fairly easy going for me. I heard back from the company I applied to that had me take a writing test. Sadly, they said no to me and have decided to go with someone else. It’s disappointing, but I am still confident that I’ll be hearing good news soon. The most difficult part isn’t he no for me, the most difficult part is the lack of feedback. I want to know why I’m not being accepted into these positions. I email after each denial asking for feedback, but have yet to hear a reply. Otherwise the week has been spent working on other things.

This week has been spent working on various different things. I worked on the game I’m making with a few friends. Which has been going fairly well. I’m excited to see how it turns out and how people like it. I’ve also been working on developing the world for the D&D campaign I’m running my dad and brother through. Since I haven’t been able to work on the side game I started this has been my area to world build, and I’m hoping to return to my side project in the future. The only other things would be the job hunt. It’s getting harder for me to think of places to look. I’m still hopeful and reaching out to different people.

Well till next week you guys! I hope you all have an awesome time and I wish good luck to you all.

Starting and Hunting

Hello my friends,

I hope you guys had a wonderful week. My week went pretty well. I spent a lot of my week working on stuff for Tales of Mahabharata’s expansion, job hunting, and starting work for some other games. The stuff for Tales of Mahabharata was wrapping up the last few quests and editing. The rest of the writing should be in editing and finished soon. The rest of the expansion will hopefully move smoothly along, but the studio was having some issues. I also applied to some jobs this week and I’m hoping to hear from them soon. It’s always nice to hear and see the people that have been willing to help me. It’s heartwarming and humbling. I hope I can make them proud and get a good job.

The rest of this week I spent working on different side projects. A friend I helped in college reached out and asked me for help on a story. So I created a basic outline for the story I have planned for his game. It’s an interesting concept and I look forward to seeing the story I could make in it. I also further expanded my Game Design Document (GDD) for my personal project. I’m giving the game the title “Order of the Forest.” I’m having a hard time staying focused on it with everything else going on. I’m excited about the game though and I hope to learn a lot making it.

Well till next week you guys! I hope you do awesome and I look forward to letting you guys know what happens.

The End of my Masters

Hello my buddies!

I'm sorry for not posting last week. I've been super busy. Last week I had my final BTS. It was very bittersweet. It was so much fun. I was a stage manager again, but this month had a special twist. We had a guest for the months career development panel. Our guest was Tionne "Tboz" Watkins, the head singer of TLC. She was really cool and fun to hang out with. It was also pretty funny when Garry Jones, Full Sail's President, found out it was my last one. He started joking about foreseeing a course failure in my future. He also would call me out during the panels for graduating soon and other stuff. Then it was really cool because I got to hear how many people were interested in helping me after graduation. The experience was really heartwarming and it was an honor to work with these different people. I look forward to returning for BTS in the future, but next time as a speaker.

This was the end of my Masters program. Now I move forward into the world. I have graduation this upcoming Friday and the next day I fly home to Seattle. The entire program was without a doubt amazing. The ups and downs, the new experiences and a great way for me to grow my portfolio and network. The program led to me going to GDC and being able to expand my skill set. I'm so happy with my experience in my program. I may have faced all sorts of issues or problems in my experience, but they were all worth it. I learned so much via all of these problems. I'm excited but scared about my next steps. Who knows what will happen next, but without a doubt it'll be exciting.

My studio also released the game I've been working on. It's currently in early access on steam for $4.99. The game is named Tales of Mahabharata. It takes an ancient Indian epic and gamifies it. I had a lot of fun working on it so check it out and tell me what you think.

Well till next time you guys! I hope you have a great week and are ready for the future.

Halfway Done with the Final Month

Hello my friends!

This past week has been a bit exhausting. I've been super busy with everything that I've been working on. However, it's been worth it. We're so close to releasing our game Tales of Mahabharata for early access. I'm so excited for it. We've been running our Facebook and trying to post frequently. This allows us to build our audience and hopefully gather a following. It's been an awesome experience.

The other aspects of this week are all school related. I've been wrapping up this month. Today I finished making my poster presentation and I'm going to be getting feedback on it soon. I've been able to combine all of my research and create an argument for my topic. I believe I've said my topic before but just in case, my topic is "How to Improve Narrative." I go into detail on my findings and the options I feel should be taken. I'm excited for everything that is going on and what the future holds. I'm a little nervous, but I believe in my capabilities and I'm ready to end my Masters with a great presentation.

Well till next week my friends! I have BTS next Saturday so I maybe a little late. I hope you guys have a great week and everything goes well.

Nearing the End of an Era

Hello my friends!

I apologize for the late post, yesterday was BTS and it kept me super busy. This past week has been really good. We were able to make a lot of progress on Tales of the Mahabharata, the game I'm producing. Our art is going to be finished next week. The rest is just implementation and polish. I'm super excited for the game to be finished. We got feedback from various industry professionals. They gave us valuable feedback and we already are working towards fixing the issues they may have seen. It was great to be able to hear their critiques and insight. I'm excited for when the game is released and you guys can play it.

BTS was a lot of fun. I was a stage manager for the Career Dev panel. It's weird to think that this BTS was my second to last one. It was also one of my bosses final BTS, his name is Jim. I have been working BTS for so long I have gone through seven bosses. Out of my original BTS crew the only constants now are me and my other boss Andy. It's weird to see Jim leave the team and move to a different department. He was a great boss and someone I had a lot of fun working towards. This is just one step closer to the end, and I'm getting more and more anxious each day. However ,I'm also excited.

Well till next my friends. I wish you an awesome week and I hope you have a lot of fun.
